Mobile collision repair can handle a lot of everyday damage right where your car is parked: door dings, creased panels, hail dents and scuffed plastic bumpers. Structural, high-voltage and frame work still belongs in a shop. Knowing where that line falls saves you time, and it helps you book the right repair the first time.
TL;DR
- Paintless dent repair (PDR) removes minor to moderate dents without repainting, and it travels well, so it is the core of mobile work.
- Plastic bumper repair and many cosmetic fixes can also be done at your home or office.
- Deep or stretched dents, cracked paint, frame damage and some electric-vehicle repairs need a body shop.
- A good mobile estimate depends on a clean panel, good lighting and access behind the damage.
- At Dent Erasers LLC, we serve Contra Costa County and nearby areas, and you can get a free dent quote before you decide.

What a mobile technician can repair onsite
The most portable repair is paintless dent repair. According to NAPDRT, technicians massage the panel from behind with specialized tools, so the factory paint stays in place. The same source reports that many PDR repairs take less than an hour. Hail damage is typically repaired in one day, where a body shop may need two to three weeks for comparable work.
Onsite work usually covers:
- Door dings and parking-lot dents. NAPDRT says the most common dents fixed are golf-ball-sized and smaller.
- Larger dents and creases that the paint has survived. Our large dent repair service covers these, and each one gets assessed individually.
- Hail and windstorm damage. Our gallery shows a fender repair on a windstorm-damaged truck.
- Plastic bumper damage. See our plastic bumper repair page.
- Specialty vehicles. We repair luxury, classic and motorcycle dents, and handle fleet and lease-return work. Details are on our specialty services page.
If you want the technical limits of PDR in more depth, our guide to PDR size limits and the five-factor check walks through how a technician decides.
What shapes whether a dent is repairable
Not every dent responds to the same method. NAPDRT notes that PDR may not work on dents that are too deep or stretched, have cracked paint, or sit in difficult places such as some panel edges. Depth, location and paint condition all matter.
NAPDRT’s procedure guidance also lists sharp or deep dents, corner and edge dents, tight-radius curves, creases, ribbed roofs and extended panels as damage that needs a separate evaluation instead of standard pricing. That is why a photo or in-person look comes before any firm number.
Aluminum panels add another variable. I-CAR explains that aluminum work-hardens during reshaping, and aluminum-specific pulling tools exist for it. A NAPDRT and ASA aluminum study found that participating technicians estimated aluminum PDR needed 70% to 150% more pressure than steel. Experience with the metal matters as much as the tool.
When the repair belongs in a body shop
Mobile capability is conditional. Environment, access and structure can all turn a mobile job into a shop visit. Weather is one factor: in its guidance on mobile glass work, Safelite says active rain, high wind, extreme cold and cramped working space can stop a safe mobile job. It adds that structural frame repairs require shop equipment.
Three situations typically point to a shop:
- Structural or frame damage. Welding and measuring work needs a controlled setting. I-CAR notes that full-frame work may require a 220-volt welder, and that an inadequate welder can create an unsafe repair.
- Electric vehicles with high-voltage systems. Honda’s repair information for the 2024 to 2026 Prologue requires prescribed high-voltage disabling and testing procedures and a 10,000-pound lift, which is shop territory.
- Paint-cracked or heavily stretched panels. These need refinishing, which is part of our auto body and collision repair work.
Another point: some electronic work can travel too. FenderBender reports that mobile ADAS specialists carry camera targets, radar reflectors and portable calibration systems between customer locations. That is a separate trade from dent repair, so after a bumper or fender job, ask your repairer whether your vehicle needs a sensor calibration.
How a mobile repair visit works
The process is simple, and your part in it is small.
- Share photos and details. Send pictures of the damage and tell us where the car will be.
- Prepare the car. NAPDRT says estimates should be made on a clean vehicle with professional PDR lighting. A quick wash helps, and if the panel has road grime, a guide on how to remove tar from your car shows a safe way to do it.
- Access and leverage. The same guidance says technicians may need to remove obstructions, trim or other parts to reach behind the damage.
- Repair and inspect. The technician works the dent out in small steps and checks it under light.
Choose a spot with room around the vehicle and some shade. A garage, a covered parking space or a calm day all help.
Our perspective
After more than 27 years in dent repair, we have learned that convenience only counts when the repair is right. Mobile service is not a shortcut for us. It is the way we bring skilled hands to your driveway or office lot, so you keep your day and your car keeps its factory finish.
We tell owners plainly what we can fix on the spot. Most everyday dings, creases and hail damage are good candidates for paintless work, and we also handle plastic bumpers, luxury and classic cars, motorcycles, fleets and lease returns. When a panel needs more than PDR, we say so before work begins.
Our goal is a high first-time fix rate, fast turnaround and a result you cannot find by looking at the panel.

Costs and insurance
Our published ranges are $150 to $500 for paintless dent repair, $100 to $500 for minor dent repair and $150 to $1,500 for large dent repair. Your price depends on dent size, depth, location and panel material. Bumper and body repairs are quoted after we see the damage.
If an insurance claim is involved, we offer insurance claim assistance. FenderBender reports that collision shops often use mobile vendors for high-volume work such as dent repair, and that these vendors sometimes prepare estimates and photos in CCC One. Ask your insurer which documentation it needs, and we will help you gather it.

FAQ
What dents cannot be removed?
Dents that are very deep or stretched, have cracked paint, or sit on certain edges may not suit PDR, according to NAPDRT. Many of these can still be repaired with body repair and refinishing. A technician can tell you which route fits after seeing the panel.
Do I need to be there during a mobile repair?
It helps to be there for the estimate so you can agree on the plan. The technician needs a safe, accessible spot for the car. Talk to us about arrangements that fit your schedule.
How long does mobile dent repair take?
NAPDRT reports that many PDR repairs take under an hour, and hail damage is typically a one-day job. Larger or more complex damage takes longer, and we will give you a time frame with your quote.
Can mobile repair handle my luxury or classic car?
Yes, we repair luxury, classic and vintage vehicles and motorcycles, and we protect the original paint wherever the damage allows. See our specialty services for the full list.
